The scandal could not have come at a worse
time. A post-war depression was sinking in around the country. America’s need for its old national pastime was at its climax and this disaster ruined everything. The Official Encyclopedia of Baseball says, “baseball suffered a near-fatal
blow upon the revelation that the infamous Chicago ‘Black Sox’ had thrown the 1919 Series . . .” For America’s die-hard fans, this was a rage that they might never recover from. Still, baseball fans talk about the scandal with a lowered voice.
